Bahasa Indonesia and Chinese Language are offered. We prepare our students for continued academic success and for their future. Whilst with us, students learn to think, work and play. We recognize that each student is unique and that individual abilities differ but we believe that everyone can benefit by being encouraged and challenged. Our classes are kept small (max. of 25 per class) so that our teachers can cater to each student’s individual needs. Students have fulfilling and meaningful school years with us as they are placed in a nurturing environment shaped by a caring and congenial community of staff, parents and peers.

We are committed to the highest standards as we deliver an ACS education encompassing academic excellence to all our students. An ACS education stands for the total development of a child so as to maximize his or her potential for the greater good and service to others. Anchoring it is the strong belief that in addition to the mind, body and spirit, there is also a need to enrich the soul, which touches the heart and gives character to the being. Every facet of our education develops openness, respect, consideration and compassion. We adopt internationally accredited programmes of learning from the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) Board, with curriculum developed from best practices in Singapore, the UK, the US and elsewhere internationally. Students are nurtured to be independent and empowered learners, thereby acquiring discipline, self confidence and self-esteem.

The School offers a wide range of sporting, musical and dramatic opportunities and co-curricular activities. Through this they can develop a breadth of interests and learn to play and work co-operatively across different age levels. The different Level camps held within Indonesia and overseas bring students’ learning beyond the confines of the classroom and help in the cultivation of global perspectives. Jakarta World Academy (JWA) offers Toddler to Kindergarten Two programme. For Toddler to Kindergarten One, Jakarta World Academy provides a challenging and engaging early years (EY) curriculum that develops students physically, intelectually, emotionally and socially. The early years curriculum bases students learning on the standards set out in the Early Year Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework from the UK.

Within the Early Years Foundation Stage programme, there are seven areas of learning. The prime areas begin to develop quickly in response to relationships and experiences, and run through and support learning in all other areas. The Prime Areas continue to be fundamental throughout the EYFS. The specific areas include essential skills and knowledge. They grow out of the prime areas, and provide important context for learning.

Jakarta World Academy authorised to offer the Cambridge Primary programme for Kindergarten Two students. With its programmes, JWA provides a special focus on holistic development with a child-centred approach which helps students to begin to make sense of their world through a broad and balanced learning environment. English is the language of instruction, and all students study Bahasa Indonesia and Mandarin. JWA offers a strong Chinesse programme in partnership with the prestigious Peking University Kindergarten and Elementary School, Beijing, China.

On our Secondary campus, in tune with many New Zealand Secondary Schools, students take on the challenge of preparing for university entrance exams by studying IGCSE and A Levels for the University of Cambridge International Examinations (  This globally recognised qualification provides entry to all leading universities in the world.

On both Campuses we offer small class sizes with native English-speaking expatriate teachers (mainly Kiwis!) resulting in a high degree of teacher attention and pastoral care.  It is well known that the quality of the relationship between parent, student and teacher is fundamental to your child's success and this is something we foster from the first day your child joins the NZIS family.

At all times the schools practices are aligned with their Vision: True Knowledge, Faith in Christ and Godly Character; and their Mission: Proclaiming the Preeminence of Christ and Engaging in the Redemptive Restoration of All Things in Him through Holistic Education.

Located in a beautifully scenic campus outside the hustle and bustle of the city center, MIS was originally founded in 1969 to provide a holistic education to the children of the US and UK Consulates. In a green, peaceful, and stimulating environment, students are challenged through our high academic standards and also learn to build strong character. The MIS student profile is central to all of our teaching and learning and students learn on a daily basis to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective individuals with the constant support and guidance of highly qualified and experienced teachers, all of whom are qualified to teach in their home countries. The majority of our teachers also hold Master’s degrees in their fields and have an average of over ten years’ experience each. Class sizes are kept small to ensure every child gets the focused attention they deserve and the school has less than one hundred students in total from Preschool to Senior High.

With our full-size football field, swimming pool, and gym, our students also have access to the best sporting and health facilities in Medan. These facilities are also freely open to parents, families, and friends on the weekends when MIS becomes a hub for the local and international community. Our library, Medan’s largest collection of English language books, is also second to none and classrooms are fully equipped with the latest resources from overseas. Transportation is available from various locations around Medan. Medan Independent School (formerly Medan International School), is Medan’s only WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accredited school and offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP), and the Diploma Program (DP). MIS is also the only school in Medan to be a member of the East Asian Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS).

Curriculum: UWCSEA designed Primary and Middle School Programme, (I)GCSE, IB Diploma
Grades: Kindergarten 1 – Grade 12 (4 – 18 years)
Boarding: Grades 8 –12 (ages 13 to 18)

UWCSEA is member of the UWC movement and a K-12 international school in Singapore. The UWC movement is a global group of 12 schools and colleges whose shared mission, based on the educational philosophy of Kurt Hahn, is to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

UWCSEA’s goal is to educate individuals to embrace challenge and take responsibility for shaping a better world, by providing achallenging, holistic, values-based educational programme that comprises five interlinking elements:

  • Academics – an inquiry-based programme in Primary and Middle School allows students to take an integrated approach to subjects. In High School, (I)GCSE exams in Grade 10 are followed by the IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12.

  • Activities – a vital part of student life and learning, providing a chance to explore talents, develop new skills and to be successful beyond the classroom.
Outdoor Education –age-appropriate experiences designed to develop confidence in their physical abilities and emotional resilience to withstand difficult situations.

  • Personal and Social Education – opportunities for personal and social development.

  • Service - empowering students to become aware, able and active contributors to the community

UWCSEA has around 5,200 students from over 80 nationalities on two campuses attending Kindergarten 1 to Grade 12 (aged four to 18 years) Residential boarding is available for students in Grade 8 and above. Boarders enjoy the care of dedicated staff, many of whom are also teachers at the College, while staying in purpose-built accommodation. Founded in 1971, UWCSEA is a not-for-profit school that is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading international schools. UWCSEA Dover is one of the world’s largest IB Diploma schools and its students consistently achieve superb exam results. In May 2013, the average diploma point score was an excellent 36 points.

UWCSEA admissions staff visit Jakarta annually; please contact the Admissions Department to find out when they will next be in town to schedule an appointment to discuss opportunities for boarding at UWCSEA. To find out more please visit our website and contact the Admissions department.

More about the Indonesian Education System

In the mid-1990s, the Indonesian Department of Education and Culture began to open opportunities for the development of what were at that time termed "national plus schools". Categories have now changed and all schools must be one of the following three categories:

  1. National schools - offering the national curriculum only
  2. Embassy schools - offering the curriculum from the home country and accessible only to citizens from that country - what we formerly referred to as "international schools".
  3. SPK schools - offering overseas programmes such as the IB but using elements of the national curriculum. SPK stands for Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama - Cooperative Education unit. They must have a direct tie with an overseas school or an overseas educational authority. Admission is open to expatriate children and some of these schools offer international curriculum and English as the medium of instruction. They are a great alternative to the more expensive embassy schools for expatriates whose companies will not cover the cost of education, as well as for the children of mixed Indonesian-expat marriages.

Enrollment in most Indonesian schools begins in April of each year for July admission.
